Wire Self-Portrait Project
Project Criteria
Portrait should be life size or larger and MUST have VOLUME, DEPTH and DIMENSION! This is not a drawing in wire but a 3D sculptural representation, a portrait bust built of wire.
Study your face in the mirror closely. Think about how you will use the wire to define contours, create textures, patterns, and volume in a way that resembles you. Find the characteristics and important details that define your face and use deliberately chosen lines to translate to wire. Ask yourself if your project looks like you.
Consider line weight, how the lines will be layered in space depending on the vantage point of the viewer, the lighting and shadows, color of the surrounding area.
Can you direct the vantage point of the viewer by installing the piece in a certain way? Will it stand upright on its own? Will you attach it to the wall? Suspend it at eye level? How will you integrate the method of installation into the piece? Choice and method of installation should NOT be an afterthought.
You will have the option to paint your completed sculpture with latex paint. White paint will be provided but feel free to purchase your own from a hardware store (many sell small test sizes of some colors). However, you may only use one color throughout. You can use your mini practice projects from the homework as test pieces.
