Transformation of Forms

For this project you will begin by finding two small objects: one organic object and one man-made object. Make an effort to choose objects that are fully three-dimensional.  Bring these to class on Wednesday, September 14th.

man-made =artificial, synthetic, industrial, fake.

organic=natural, living, biological, animate

Do drawings of each of the objects, and then create a series of drawings that represent possibilities for the three intermediary objects. Bring these to class on Monday, September 18th.

You will then reproduce each of those objects in clay as faithfully as possible, to a scale of 5". You may use any combination of building techniques: pinch pots, coil-building, and slab-building.

You will then create three more objects that illustrate a transformation of the organic form to the man-made form. Each of these objects will also be built to a scale of 5".

Utilize surface to enhance the transformation of one form to the other. The surface you apply to each of these objects is up to you. Your surfaces may mimic those of your found object if you choose, but they may also be invented.

The objectives of this assignment are:

  • to develop the ability to really see a dimensional object and reproduce that object in clay in exact proportion and scale;

  • to continue to learn how to best utilize the different handbuilding techniques to create hollow, three-dimensional objects;

  • to continue to develops skill with and understanding of low-fire decorating materials;

  • to continue to learn how to communicate ideas through three-dimensional form and surface.
