Other info: optional, and keep it brief
With my art, I was inspired by the Native American room in Morell Hall, when we went to look at some pieces to inspire us. I wanted to build my teepee’s by hand because I wanted to see and feel what it was like to build what they lived in. To wrap the teepee’s I used, blue, purple, red, orange, and yellow thread to show my native colors, and to have my audience be curious on why I used those specific colors. I also bought some fake feathers and some colorful fabric from Michaels and with the feathers, I made leaves to resemble fall. I also got the colorful fabric and wrapped it around my teepee’s and I made sure that it was my native colors. Then with the materials that I had which was the sage, sea shell, and more sage, I wanted to show the cultural piece that my ancestors used to ward off any negative energy and spirits. In the end I wanted my piece to look more like a village and it was going to be named “The Choctaw Village” but I thought it was best to use the word “Chukka” which means home in my native language. This particular assemblage is made for my grandma who lost her culture, native name, language, and her tribe overall because she attended the boarding schools as a little girl to “civilize Native American children”.
